REVIEW: Ni Hao, Kai-lan: Kai-lan's Great Trip to China!

A few months ago Princess D discovered Ni Hao, Kai-lan on Nick Jr. and fell in love with it. We now own two Ni Hao, Kai-lan DVDs and two outfits. Move over Dora, there is a new girl in town! (Don't worry Disney Princesses ... you all are still first in her heart.)

Princess D's best friend is Chinese so she could easily relate to the main character, Kai-lan. She loves the colorful and fun animation, the easy to sing songs and learning some words in Chinese so that she can trying to talk to her best friend. You can imagine how excited she was to get a copy of the new Ni Hao, Kai-lan: Kai-lan's Great Trip to China! DVD for me to review.

Ni Hao, Princess D!

The new episode did not disappoint. After watching it twice through Princess D was already singing the songs. It features a baby panda who loves watermelon, so Princess D kept saying over and over "awww, he's so adorable!" and attempting to say the Chinese word for "watermelon".

What I love about Ni Hao, Kai-lan is that every episode teaches a specific lesson. This new episode focuses on trying new things in an attempt to overcome your fears. The other two episodes on the DVD teach how to have fun on rainy days and how to see things from different perspectives. This has turned our morning commute into a great time for learning!

My only complaint about this show is that Chinese is a hard language to learn due to the complex pronunciation. It would be helpful if the words said were displayed phonetically on the bottom of the screen to help parents learn the words so that we can repeat and reinforce them with the child.

If you haven't checked out Ni Hao, Kai-lan on Nick Jr. or you already love the show you can pick up the new Ni Hao, Kai-lan: Kai-lan's Great Trip to China! DVD starting July 14, 2009. The running time is 96 minutes, featuring 3 episodes and one music video. The suggested retail price is $16.99.
